"Overall a very pleasant experience dealing with the Company. Experienced trades were quickly able to establish the fault in our evaporative cooling. Further they provided a competitive quote for a replacement unit and were able to give us an installation date quite soon given it was the busiest period for their business (peak summers). We are now awaiting the installation which was booked in by their friendly receptionist.”

What is Evaporative Cooling?

Evaporative cooling is a natural and energy-efficient way to cool the air. It works by using water to cool the air through evaporation.

This process involves evading water from a wet pad or membrane, which cools the surrounding air. The cooled air is blown into the home or building, providing a refreshing and comfortable environment. Evaporative cooling systems are a popular choice for homes and businesses in Canberra and surrounding areas, as they are environmentally friendly and cost-effective.

Benefits of Evaporative Cooling Systems

These air con systems offer several benefits for Canberra homes, including:

  • Energy Efficiency: Evaporative cooling systems use significantly less energy than traditional air conditioning systems, making them a cost-effective choice.
  • Environmental Benefits: These systems are a natural and environmentally friendly way to cool the air, producing no harmful emissions or pollutants.
  • Improved Indoor Air Quality: Evaporative cooling systems use fresh, outside air to cool the home or building, improving indoor air quality and reducing the risk of respiratory problems.
  • Low Maintenance: While regular servicing is necessary to ensure optimal performance, evaporative cooling systems are generally low maintenance compared to traditional air conditioning systems.

REPAIRS FOR HEATING AND AIR CON SYSTEMS IN CANBERRA

We offer routine servicing and evaporative cooler repairs in Canberra. Regular evaporative air conditioning servicing is crucial to maintain optimal performance and prevent issues like blockages and overheating.

No matter how well you maintain your heating and cooling unit, it will eventually need more extensive cooling repairs. Your unit may also break down due to normal wear and tear, age, exposure to the elements, how well it was installed at the initial installation date, or the quality of the evaporative cooler. Whatever the reason, we can repair systems quickly and efficiently.

If you notice that your heating and cooling unit begins to leak, make unusual sounds, work less effectively, or use too much water, or if it stops working altogether, call us. We’ll come out on the same day to take a look, and advise you on the best course of action.

It is recommended that your evaporative cooler be serviced every 2-3 years to ensure optimal efficiency. Our qualified service technician will be able to establish whether your evaporative cooler needs some maintenance and repairs or needs to be replaced entirely.

Most systems last 10 to 15 years. The longevity of heating and cooling systems depends heavily on the cooling systems themselves, the brand, and the installation quality. If necessary, our staff can completely remove your evaporative cooling unit to make way for a replacement unit.

We can supply and install any evaporative cooling unit on the market. We’ll fit it, run new ducting if needed, and install new ceiling registers if the unit requires them. We’ll help you choose a new system that fits into your home and your budget. All you need to do is give us a call and set up an appointment for an assessment of your evaporative cooling, Canberra.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ANNUAL SERVICE?<br />

Once you contact the locally-owned Canberra Plumbing & Drains service team, a service technician will provide a prompt response to inspect your heating and cooling unit. Step one of the process is arguably the most important: clean the cooling systems’ filters.

A dirty filter drastically reduces the cooling systems’ efficiency because of minimised airflow due to blockage and clogging. When the airflow is obstructed, the air can go through the filter and carry the dirt to the evaporator coil, hindering its ability to absorb heat. As a result, a dirty filter can effectively increase cooling systems’ energy consumption from 5% to 15%.

The process of heating and cooling systems’ service is the following:

    – The technician will remove all the louvres and filter pads. They will be cleaned thoroughly to get rid of dust, dirt, spider webs and mould.
    – Then, the water pump and drain valve will be inspected to identify any leaks.
    – The float valve and solenoid valve will be inspected to ensure they’re operating correctly.
    – The internal water tank will be flushed and cleaned.
    – The technician will go onto the roof to inspect the flashings, the water line for leaks, and also the drainpipe.
    – Lastly, the technician will complete a full function test.

WHAT DO I DO IF MY EVAPORATIVE COOLER BREAKS DOWN?<br />

The first step is don’t panic! You know that Canberra Plumbing & Drains are only a click away. The cooling solutions to your problems can be solved with our same day service. Our team has intimate knowledge of Canberra, Queanbeyan and Jerrabomberra cooling repairs because we are local. No big national call centres from our side! Only friendly service that’s prompt and personal.

SOME SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN DO BEFORE WE ARRIVE<br />
    1. Check that the power is in fact on and that the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped.
    2. Ensure that the water supply is turned on.
    3. See if it takes longer than 10 minutes to start. The tank filling up with water and pre-wetting the filter pads shouldn’t take any longer than that.
    4. Check that the pump has been chosen on the wall control.
    5. See if the fan operating and that air is excreting from the vents.
    6. Ensure the vents are pointing airflow towards the ceiling and the floor.
WHAT WILL THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN DO WHEN THEY ARE AT MY HOME?<br />

When servicing an evaporative cooling unit, our technician will do investigations to establish the problem with the unit. Then, they will begin the repairs to ensure it can function optimally once more and circulate clean air.

While evaporative coolers don’t have many moving parts so they aren’t that likely to have mechanical breakdowns, they can get clogged from dust and debris. A damp environment can also encourage the growth of mould or bacteria.

Depending on repair services required, the technician will:

      • remove and clean the louvres and filter pads,
      • clean the water tank
      • test for correct airflow,
      • test the water pump, float and solenoid valves, fan and drain.

If any new parts are required, take note that Canberra Plumbing only supplies and fits genuine parts. No cheap or generic parts are used under any circumstances, and we provide a warranty to back up our services.

WHY HAS MY EVAPORATIVE COOLING UNIT BROKEN?<br />

If your cooling unit hasn’t been serviced regularly or well maintained, it probably won’t work to its full potential.

Here are some common issues that occur:

      1. A mechanical failure can lead to inconsistent or no airflow.
      2. The wires leading to the breaker should be flexible. If they’re discoloured and stiff, the wiring may be faulty.
      3. A faulty thermostat will signal that the temperature you entered has been met when it hasn’t. That means the thermostat needs replacing.
      4. If a cooler runs for too long with insufficient voltage, getting damaged is very likely. The unit whole could short circuit and need replacing.
      5. If the fan belt has come out of place or broken, it could lead to motor failure.
WHEN IS IT A GOOD TIME TO ASK QUESTIONS?

Don’t be shy! Ask as many questions as you’d like, at any time. Our phone operators and technicians are very friendly and patient and will take their time to ensure you understand all the information. If you don’t understand the quote, we will provide a thorough breakdown so that you know exactly what you’re paying for and why.

Why Are People Choosing Cooling Systems Over Traditional Air Conditioning Systems?

Evaporative cooling systems are superior to air conditioning systems because they can cool the whole house in an eco-friendly manner that’s more affordable.

Traditional air conditioning takes the air in your home and cools it down by sending the air through a fan coil. It is then delivered back to the home, but all doors and windows must be kept tightly shut so that the newly cooled cold air doesn’t escape. Plus, the air takes a while to get cold.

Conversely, evaporative cooling draws in air from outside through a cooling unit situated on the roof. This warm air from outside is filtered through wet pads, and evaporation cools the air and increases its moisture content. The cool air is then dispersed through ducts that have been placed throughout the house.

Unlike air conditioners, evaporative coolers provide cool air optimally in open areas. They are especially more effective than air conditioners in areas with a hot, dry climate. And, unlike air conditioning systems, evaporative cooling units don’t use CFCs, which can affect the ozone layer, and don’t release them into the atmosphere.

WHAT'S THE Air Conditioning System Cost Compared to Evaporative Cooling<br />

Evaporative units are costly to buy and install because the installers must be licensed with the Australian Refrigeration Council and the installation is very labour intensive.

Additionally, because the unit doesn’t just supply cool air to one room, it services the whole house, the price is exponentially more than an air conditioning unit that only provides cool air to a single room. But, if you wanted to buy air conditioners to cool the whole house the same way the cooling unit does, it will push the price up significantly.

But, the deciding factor is when you look at the long haul: evaporative coolers use much less power than air conditioning systems. This saves you on utility costs, as medium-sized air conditioners can cost $400-$500 per year to run, whereas an evaporative unit only takes $200-$300 per year to cool the entire house.
