Did you know that the total average daily water use for the Australian Capital Territory is approximately 200 MEGA litres? Unfortunately, some of that total is accounted for in household leaks that have either gone unnoticed or ignored.

Monitoring your water meter is great way to determine whether or not you might have a leak somewhere in your home. The water meter is usually located at the front of your property, close to the property boundary line. It measures the number of litres used in your house and garden. Your water meter also has an isolation valve that turns off the supply of water to your household during any maintenance or in the case of emergencies.

Checking your Water Meter for a Leak

Do you believe you have a water leak in your home but aren’t 100% sure? Checking your water meter is a great way to determine whether or not you may have a water leak on your property. To check your water meter, follow the three simple steps below.

Step One:Turn off all water appliances in your home, including your washing machine and dishwasher, and ensure that no water is being used.

Step Two: Locate your water meter and make note of the number last thing at night, reading the numbers on the meter from eft to right. The black numbers represent kilolitres (1000 litres) and the red numbers represent litres.

Step Three: The next morning, before using any water, check your water meter again and make note of the reading. Compare the numbers from the morning to the night before. If the numbers have changed – and you are sure that no water was used overnight – you may have a water leak somewhere on your property.

How often should I check my Water Meter?

It is recommended that you check you water meter regularly – ideally at the same time every month. This is so that you can monitor your home for any hidden leaks, but also so you can monitor your monthly household water usage.
